Pranab Mukherjee, the first Bengali President of India and a friend of Bangladesh, is no more. He was 84 years old.

After three weeks of treatment at the Army Hospital Research and Referral in Delhi, the respected politician died on Monday evening

Pranab was admitted to the hospital on August 10 after falling in the bathroom and injuring his head. During the operation, he was found to be infected with coronavirus. At one point he went into a deep coma. He could not return from there.

His son Abhijit Mukherjee said in a tweet in the evening, "Today we have to inform everyone with a heavy heart, and despite the best efforts of the hospital doctors and the prayers and supplications of all Indians, my father Shri Pranab Mukherjee has just passed away."

Pranab Mukherjee, who served as the 13th President of India from 2012 to 2017, was a man of all seasons in the language of Indian media.

Expressing grief over his death, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a tweet, "India is mourning the death of Bharat Ratna Pranab Mukherjee today."

Modi, who has spent most of his five-decade political career in the Congress, shared a picture of Pranab Mukherjee stepping down. He is an outstanding scholar, a glorious statesman, respected in all walks of life.
