A trawler sinks, 17 killed |
Upon receiving the news, the rescue workers of the fire service started the rescue work with the help of the locals. The
district administration has formed a committee to investigate the incident. The
fire service suspended the rescue operation as darkness fell.
The deceased have been identified as Mafuzur Rahman, 45, a
resident of Kanapara village in Mymensingh and teacher of Markasunna Hafizia
Madrasa, his son Asif Mia, 15, Mahmud Mia, 12, Isa Mia, 45, son of Helal Uddin,
Zahid Hasan, 20, and Waz Uddin. Daughters Lubna Akhter (10) and Zulfa Akhter
(8), Rezaul Karim (18), Saiful Islam (30), Jubayer (22), Hamidur Islam (35),
Azaharul Islam (35), Shafiqur Rahman (40), his son Saman (10), Shamim Hasan
(10), Mujahid (18) and Shahidul Islam (40).
Madrasa teacher Manjurul Islam, 35, who survived the accident, told reporters that they were all residents of Kanapara village in Mymensingh. They went out to Haor by boat.He said he was on the roof of the boat when the boat suddenly capsized in the air and he jumped from the roof and started swimming. At one point, as he was about to drown,he tore off Guy's Punjabi and took off his pajamas. Then he swam ashore. He said the boat was carrying more passengers than its carrying capacity.
Deputy Commissioner Moin-ul Islam said the families of each
of the victims had been given taka 7,000 each. A four-member committee has also
been formed to investigate the incident. However, he did not immediately name
the members of the committee.
