Dhaka, Bangladesh

Dhaka is the capital of Bangladesh. It is situated on the bank of the river Buriganga and it is the largest city in Bangladesh. Dhaka has a total area of 306.38 square kilometers (118.29 sq mi). Dhaka is the ninth-largest city in the world. It is a densely populated city with a population of about 8.906 million (2011).


The economic, political, and cultural center of Bangladesh is Dhaka. It is the largest city in Eastern South Asia and among the Bay of Bengal countries. Dhaka is located just north of the Buriganga River. The city is surrounded by Buriganga River, Turag River, River, and Shitalakshya River and Shitalakshya River. Dhaka is a district and a division. Dhaka has numerous state and diplomatic institutions. The National Parliament House and most ministries of the Government of Bangladesh are housed in Dhaka. The name of official residence and workplace of the President of Bangladesh is Bangabhaban. The Gonobhaban is the official residence of the Prime Minister. It is situated on the north side of Parliament. The Prime Minister’s Office is in Tejgaon area in the city. The Supreme Court, the Dhaka High Court and the Foreign Ministry are in Ramna area in Dhaka. Several central installations of the Bangladesh Army are also located in Dhaka. Dhaka has 54 resident embassies and high commissions and several international organizations.


Dhaka is an old city. It was established in 1608 as Jahangir Nagar, the capital of Mughal Bengal. It was a provincial capital and commercial center of the Mughal Empire in South Asia. It became the administrative capital of east Pakistan in 1947 and at last, it became the capital of independent Bangladesh. Dhaka is now one of the most densely industrialized regions in Bangladesh.  

The population of Dhaka is increasing day by day. People from different regions of the country are coming here in search of works. Most of the residential areas are made without following any residential plan. Some areas of Dhaka city are so dense that traffic cannot run smoothly. As a result, people cannot go to their destination properly.
